PRESS RELEASE

Sutton Lane is pleased to present Stage Work and Substitutions by American artist Robert Melee.

The main gallery features the original stage the artist designed as the set for Robert Melee's Talent Show, a two-night event at 'The Kitchen', New York, for which Melee invited nine performers to perform for eight minutes each on stage. The event included a live 'marbleisation' of Melee's mother, a video of which can be watched on one of the two monitors placed on the stage. This Is For You, a dance performance curated by the artist at the legendary Judson Church in New York in 2003, is displayed on the second monitor. In this performance a group of five dancers perform 'semi-solos' on a shared stage while having to obey the restrictions of time, space and a list of nine required physical acts.

In Sutton Lane's second gallery, Robert Melee has furnished a room with a plaster and enamel coated curtain painting adorned with his signature self-portrait and large versions of his bottle cap paintings: bottle caps nailed to wood panels in a grid, coated repeatedly in plaster, and finally covered in high-gloss enamel paint. Masquerading as minimalism and op-art, these works play with the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Opposite these works the world premiere of the new video In Between False Comforts escorts the viewer on a journey of painterly abstraction, revealing sublime rhythms that echo the patterns of the paintings.

Robert Melee was born in 1966 in New Jersey, and lives and works in New Jersey. Solo exhibitions include the Corcoran Museum in Washington D.C. (2001), Art Basel Statements (2003). Group exhibitions include 'Greater New York' at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2005) and 'Adaptive Behaviour' at the New Museum, New York (2004). Robert Melee, In Between False Comforts is on view at Andrew Kreps, New York, October 13th - November 12th.
